Saturday Scoop Vol. 3
Answering your style Qs, sharing a few good sales, and recapping this week’s posts!
Good morning! I’m back home from Nashville! It was a whirlwind trip to bring my daughter and her car home from college for the summer. She was all packed and ready to go, so we loaded up the car, grabbed dinner at our favorite spot, and got a good night’s sleep at a hotel nearby before hitting the road.
It’s about a 12-hour drive from Nashville to Philly, so we stopped halfway in Roanoke, VA, to stay with my parents. That definitely made the trip more enjoyable (and easier on my old lady joints). It was great to see them and my brother’s family for dinner Thursday night, and we made it home yesterday afternoon with time to relax on the deck before it got dark.
And now the countdown to England is ON! The Nashville trip has been sort of looming over me, and now that it’s behind me, it’s full steam ahead—less than two weeks to go!
Meanwhile, I’ve got the usual Saturday Reader Q&A for you down below. If you have anything to add, feel free to leave a comment on this post! ❓Reader Q&A
Have a style question? Just reply to any email with “Q&A” in the subject line!
Q: What are some options for brow bone highlight powders that aren’t sparkly? My go-to changed their quads to have sparkly white brow bone color, and it’s stark, especially with the Perricone No Makeup Eyeshadow #2.
A: This is exactly the kind of question that inspired me to move to Substack—I love the idea of crowd-sourcing recommendations from this community. If you're reading this via email, feel free to click over and share your suggestions in the comments!
As for me, I don't experiment with a ton of makeup, and my two favorite tarte cosmetics eyeshadow palettes have been discontinued. However, I recently came across this one—it has some pretty neutrals.
Q: If you had to cut down on your clothing budget, where would you cut and why? Would you look for less priced items or would you cut the number you are actually buying?
A: I realize I buy more clothes than most people because I’m testing things and creating content for my business, but if I were cutting back personally, I’d definitely focus on buying fewer pieces rather than switching to lower-priced items. That said, I’d still shop a mix of price points—just with more intention. I’d skip the trendy impulse buys and focus on versatile staples I know I’ll wear often. Even now, I try to think about cost-per-wear and make sure I’m not buying just for the sake of newness.
Q: I got this dress from LOFT. It's styled with sandals on their website, but my feet are not my best feature and I prefer to keep them covered. Would this look OK with ankle boots? What non-sandal shoes would you recommend?
A: I totally get wanting more foot coverage, but I wouldn’t pair this dress with ankle boots—especially this time of year. I’d go for a closed-toe espadrille wedge instead. It gives you some coverage while still feeling seasonally appropriate, and the bit of height helps balance the longer hemline. A woven flat or a sleek slingback could also work if you prefer to keep things lower to the ground.
Q: I’m attending a semi-formal/formal Fundraising Gala later in May, and thought about wearing the MOG dress from my son’s wedding last year, but it feels too over the top. My other dresses seem too casual. It’s hard to find something in between! Suggestions?
A: It’s hard to say without seeing the MOG dress or knowing the vibe of the event, but if your MOG dress is a floor-length gown or very formal, I can see how it might feel like too much—especially if the gala leans more semi-formal. I’d ask around to see what others are planning to wear, and then base your choice on that. If you don’t have something that feels quite right, you could always use Rent The Runway, rather than purchasing a cocktail dress you’ll never wear again.
